Excerpt from Cartulaire de l'Abbaye de Notre-Dame des Vaux de Cernay, de l'Ordre de Citeaux, au Diocèse de Paris, Vol. 1: Composé d'Après les Chartes Originales Conservées aux Archives de Seine-Et-Oise, Enrichi de Notes, d'Index, Et d'un Dictionnaire Géographique; 1118-1250 Le Cartulaire que nous publions en ce moment sort un peu de la règle ordinaire de ces sortes de recueils ce n'est pas, en effet, seulement la reproduction d'un Cartulaire tout composé à l'avance que nous nous sommes proposée; un pareil titre a sans doute existé pour l'abbaye des Vaux de Cernay, car une table du une siècle, trouvée dans les papiers du monastère, nous paraît provenir certainement d'un Cartulaire de cette époque, et nous verrons d'ailleurs, à l'histoire des abbés que le cardinal de Meudon fit composer, vers le milieu du xvr° siècle, un Cartulaire de son abbaye; mais ce document, qui nous eût été si précieux et qui nous aurait épargné tant de recherches, est malheureusement perdu ou égaré aujourd'hui. Ce que nous avons voulu donc c'est combler cette lacune, en faisant nous - mèmes le Cartulaire qui manquait; c'est reconstituer l'histoire de l'abbaye et des posses sions des Vaux de Cernay, telle que l'auraient pu faire les moines eux - mèmes, si revivant au une siècle, ils avaient en la pensée de renouer avec leurs devanciers la chaine brisée par la révolu tion de 1789.
