An der Seite Theodor Mommsens prägte Hermann Dessau (1856-1931) über Jahrzehnte die Altertumswissenschaften an der Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Dennoch ist der Forscher, der Zeit seines Lebens der Akademie in Bescheidenheit und Demut verbunden blieb, einer größeren Öffentlichkeit kaum präsent, tritt seine Person fast vollständig hinter dem Werk zurück. Anläßlich seines 150. Geburtstags im Jahre 2006 erinnerte ein vom "Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum" organisiertes Kolloquium an Dessaus Lebensleistung. Der daraus entstandene Sammelband beleuchtet die Bedingungen seines Schaffens als jüdischer Wissenschaftler wie auch die Hauptthemen seiner wissenschaftlichen Arbeit: die Edition und Kommentierung lateinischer Inschriften (CIL, ILS), die Historia Augusta-Forschung, die antike Prosopographie (PIR) und die Geschichte der römischen Kaiserzeit. Die hier vorgelegten Beiträge werden um die Edition seiner wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Korrespondenz ergänzt.
