Die Bevölkerungsentwicklung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg machte den Bau zahlreicher neuer Kirchen nötig. Dafür engagierte die Diözese Innsbruck die führenden Architekten des Landes wie Clemens Holzmeister, Josef Lackner oder Horst H. Parson. Ein Team rund um den Leiter des Bauamtes der Diözese Innsbruck Klaus Lechner wählte für dieses Buch zwölf Bauten aus, die von Diözesankonservator Rudolf Silberberger und Diözesanarchivar Martin Kapferer kompakt beschrieben und mit Planskizzen des Bauamtstechnikers Martin Moser illustriert sind. Sicht- und erlebbar werden die Kirchenbauten durch über 60 aussagekräftige Fotografien des renommierten Innsbrucker Fotografen Rupert Larl.

Eine kunsthistorische Abhandlung über das Wesen von Kultbauten von Paul Naredi-Rainer, Ordinarius für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Innsbruck, sowie wie ein theologisch-soziologischer Beitrag zum Sinngehalt von Kirchenbauten aus der Feder des Innsbrucker Diözesanbischofs Manfred Scheuer verleihen dem Buch überregionalen Wert.
