Philip F. Gura offers the first book-length biography of William Apess (1798 1839), the Pequot Indian writer and Methodist minister who is generally regarded one of the first published Native American authors. Born in 1798 in Colrain, Massachusetts, Apess early life was marked by abuse, transiency, and alcoholism until, as a young man, he experienced a powerful conversion at a Methodist gathering. Following his conversion, Apess enlisted in the United States Army, accompanying troops sent to the Canadian front during the War of 1812. Honor Few, Fear None : The Life and Times of a Mongol (9780061137907)

When Ruben Cavazos changed his clothes at daybreak, he was no longer a CAT scan technician at the University of Southern California Medical Center. He became the man known--and, in a few special cases, feared--as Doc, international president of the Mongols, the fastest-growing and most closely watched organization of its kind in the United States. In reality, the Mongols are a tightly knit band of brothers devoted in equal measure to their club, their fellow Mongols, and their freedom. They live to enjoy life, party, and travel the open road. Above all, they demand respect. When pushed too far, Mongols join together to push back. Just ask the Hells Angels, the Ukrainian mafia, the Mexican mafia, and the U.S. government, all of whom have tested the Mongols' resolve. In Honor Few, Fear None, Doc is ready, for the first time, to share the stories of the Mongols' continuing battle to survive and thrive against incredible odds--and sometimes terrible violence.

Mafia Republic: Italy's Criminal Curse. Cosa Nostra, 'Ndrangheta and Camorra from 1946 to the Present (9781444726411)

In MAFIA REPUBLIC, John Dickie, Professor of Italian Studies at University College, London and author of the international bestsellers COSA NOSTRA and MAFIA BROTHERHOODS, shows how the Italian mafias have grown in power and become more and more interconnected, with terrifying consequences. In 1946, Italy became a democratic Republic, thereby entering the family of modern western nations. But deep within Italy there lurked a forgotten curse: three major criminal brotherhoods, whose methods had been honed over a century of experience. As Italy grew, so did the mafias. Sicily's Cosa Nostra, the camorra from Naples, and the mysterious 'ndrangheta from Calabria stood ready to enter the wealthiest and bloodiest period of their long history. Italy made itself rich by making scooters, cars and handbags. The mafias carved out their own route to wealth through tobacco smuggling, construction, kidnapping and narcotics. And as criminal business grew exponentially, the mafias grew not just

Ideas of Heaven : A Ring of Stories (9780393326871)

Intense in subject yet restrained in tone, these stories are about longings-often held for years-and the ways in which sex and religion can become parallel forms of dedication and comfort. Though the stories stand alone, a minor element in one becomes major in the next. In "My Shape", a woman is taunted by her dance coach, who later suffers his own heartache. A Venetian poet of the 1500s, another storyteller, is introduced to a modern traveler reading Rilke. His story precedes a mesmerizing narrative of missionaries in China. In the final story, Giles, born to a priesthood family, leans toward Buddhism after a grievous loss, and in time falls in love with the dancer of the first story. So deft and subtle is Joan Silber with these various perspectives that we come full circle surprised and enchanted by her myriad worlds. National Book Award finalist. Reading group guide included. The Damages Lottery (9781901362060)

A man slips on a dance floor and breaks his leg. He recovers damages. A child has both legs amputated as a result of meningitis and is awarded nothing. The law's justification for awarding damages in the first case is that the man's injury was the fault of someone else, while in the second case damages are denied because nobody was at fault. In this searching critique of the present law and practice relating to damages, Professor Patrick Atiyah shows that this system is in fact a lottery. He contends that the public are paying far too much for an unfair and inefficient insurance system and that reform is long overdue. His conclusion is that actions for damages for injuries should be abolished and replaced with a new no-fault road accident scheme, and actions for other injuries should be dealt with by individual or group insurance policies.
